My original background was statistics and mathematics. 

I joined a Software vendor and started implementing Forecasting solutions, then distribution planning and production planning, adding the collaborative functionalities when they appeared.

I started managing projects and doing solution architecture on full scope projects.

Moving on to PwC and IBM in a role of integrator allowed me to learn more about other vendors and to work on pure process redesign projects.
